Facebook Dating Introduces New Feature to Show Mutual Friends

Facebook announced the launch of a “Mutual Friends” feature on its Dating service today. The update aims to help users discover shared connections with potential matches. The feature is now rolling out globally.
The “Mutual Friends” tool displays profiles of people both users follow on Facebook. It appears on dating profiles when a match has friends in common. Users can view mutual connections without leaving the Dating interface. Facebook stated this feature adds context to matches. It helps people feel more comfortable connecting with others they might already know indirectly.
A company spokesperson said the feature builds on existing social networks. “People often trust others more when they share friends. This update makes dating feel safer and more relatable,” they added. Users can control visibility of their friend lists. Mutual friends will only show if both parties have public friend lists or shared connections visible.
The feature is optional. Users can hide mutual friends from their dating profiles in settings. Facebook confirmed mutual friends will not receive notifications when their connections appear on others’ dating profiles. Privacy settings from the main Facebook app apply to Dating.
Facebook Dating launched in 2019. It operates as a separate section within the main Facebook app. The service requires users to create a dedicated dating profile. It does not match users with existing Facebook friends unless both parties enable the feature.
The “Mutual Friends” update follows recent additions like video chat and event-based matching. Facebook Dating remains free to use. Competitors like Tinder and Bumble offer similar features for premium subscribers.
The global rollout will complete in the coming weeks. Users can access the feature by updating their app. Facebook Dating is available in over 20 countries. The company plans further updates to strengthen connections based on shared interests and communities.

“Dating is better when it feels natural,” the spokesperson said. “Showing mutual friends is one way to make that happen.” The feature is now live for most users in North America and Europe. Expansion to other regions continues through September.
